Athens, Nov 28: The worldwide route for the Athens torch relay could change course depending on the security threat of the cities where the flame will be carried, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge said yesterday.
According to a proposal submitted by Athens Olympic organizers to the IOC, the torch will be lit in ancient Olympia on March 25 and then travel the globe, visiting 27 countries and 34 cities on all five continents.
''What we are planning is to have the full route without exception. But if at any stage the international situation would require us to take any action to change the route or to go from one city to another, that will be done,'' Rogge said.
The torch will be in Istanbul on July 7 where dozens died and hundreds more injured in recent terrorist bombings.
