New Delhi, Aug 25: In an effort to create partnership between spirituality and politics, several eminent religious leaders today launched a multi-faith people's movement with "human welfare" as its main focus. "The movement called Adhyatma Jagran Manch (AJM) seeks to initiate and sustain a dialogue between religious and political leaders within a framework of shared spirituality," AJM national president Swami Agnivesh told reporters here.
"We are happy to work with all political parties that believe in our spiritual heritage of tolerance, compassion and religious harmony," Agnivesh said.
He said only on a spiritual foundation can secularism remain robust and authentic.
AJM's secretary Valson Thampu asserted "in today's world of coalition governments, there is a need of coalition of religions".
Several political leaders including Jyoti Basu and former Prime Minister V P Singh have desired to join the movement, Agnivesh said.
The movement will be formally inaugurated on Wednesday with Congress president Sonia Gandhi delivering the key-note address.
