Kozhikode, June 25: Amid tight police security, rehabilitation works began officially at nearby Marad, where nine persons were killed on may two, with two families of the minority community returning to their homes today. The families, comprising 11 members, were taken to their houses even as armed policemen provided security in the beach area.
The district administration began rehabilitation works this morning following the Antony government's decision to arrange for the return of the families in batches to create a favourable situation for restoring lasting peace in the area. Meanwhile, a group of people, mostly women, laid siege to the houses, where the two families had returned, demanding that they leave the area immediately.

They alleged that members of the two families were related to some of the key accused held in connection with the incident and that they need not be brought back till such time the ongoing probe was over. The protestors also demanded a CBI enquiry into the incident. Police personnel had been deployed in the area to check any untoward incident in the backdrop of beginning of rehabilitation works.
