A powerful bomb exploded outside a shopping centre in the Athens suburb of Halandri, damaging an American Express office, banks and shops, police said.
The bomb was placed on a bicycle parked at the entrance to the shopping centre on the main road linking Athens to its northern suburbs. In what police described as a powerful explosion, windows in the shopping centre shattered, but there were no reports of injuries. The police said they had not been warned of the attack and no one had claimed responsibility. The bomb blast is the first in Athens since security measures were stepped up following the September 11 attacks in the United States.
American Express, whose office in Halandri was closed when the blast occurred, has often been targeted in Athens as a symbol of US interests.
