La Paz, Aug 05: Thirty-six people were killed when an overloaded Bolivian bus, traveling on a mountain road, crashed into a precipice, authorities said.
The accident occurred late on Sunday in Caranavi, outside
Bolivia's capital, as the bus was headed on the winding road
to Los Yungas, a farming region located about 30 kms from La
Paz.
Police officials said the bus driver might have moved too close to the edge of the narrow highway to give way to oncoming traffic, and the rain-soaked ground gave in under the weight of the bus.
Rescue workers scaled the 600-meter-deep abyss covered with thick vegetation in an attempt to retrieve the bodies, but without much success.
But so far, only 10 bodies have been recovered, the officials said.
At least 40 people are believed to have been traveling aboard the bus -- 10 more than the vehicle was designed to accommodate. Bureau Reoprt
