Mumbai, Sept 20: The otherwise affable director Kaizad Gustad could give Big B much competition for the title of the “angry young man” when actress Katrina Kaif is mentioned. “We created this woman. ‘Katrina Kaif’ did not exist before Boom.” Kaif recently went on record to say she was not happy with her debut film Boom.
She said the film didn’t turn out the way it was narrated, and that she was asked to expose a lot. To this, Kaizad says Kaif was given a bound script, “just like everyone else, from Amitabh Bachchan to Zeenat Aman. We have sent Kaif a legal notice and she will have to pay for her statements.”
Gustad reveals that Katrina approached him in London, when she heard that he was casting for the film. “Her name was Katrina Torquette. We invented her entire story. I chose the name Kaif for her.” He relates how he read that Mohammed Kaif had just won a century. “I liked the name Kaif, and ‘Katrina Kaif’ had a nice ring to it.” So the story about the Kashimiri father and therefore Katrina’s Indian roots all came from the director’s curly mop.
No longer the man who made Bombay Boys and dated beauty queen Diana Hayden, Gustad has travelled many miles in his director’s hat. Dogged by controversy, Boom, which was originally supposed to be a 2002 release, will finally hit the screen on September 19. But despite the delay, Gustad and co-producer Ayesha Shroff have had their hands full. First Kaif, then Bachchan not being paid (which according to Gustad has been sorted out), the icing on their controversial cake is the appearance of many pirated copies of Boom in Surat.
Gustad actually got on a Surat-bound train with 10 others, 45 minutes after he learnt of the illegal screenings of Boom in the city. “Although the place is known as a hotbed of piracy, and there were 25 other unreleased films besides Boom being screened, no official complaint had been made before ours.” With the information he provided on the illegal screenings, the police was able to conduct a raid where 14 people were arrested on non-bailable charges.
