Beijing, May 01: China has dispatched another special SARS supervision team to Tibet to help the remote Himalayan region's efforts to stave-off the killer virus. The State Council, China's cabinet sent its fifth SARS prevention supervision team to Tibet to help local authorities, media reports said here today.
Tibet is one of the very few Chinese provinces that has not been affected by the SARS virus, which has killed 159 people and infected over 3,000 others in China.
"Leaders of the central committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council have recommended the transport of medicines and medical facilities to Tibet and urged further efforts towards SARS prevention," Xinhua news agency reported.
Tibet, which is situated some 4,000 metres above sea level, is generally isolated from the rest of China due to its remoteness. However, Sichuan province, one of Tibet's neighbouring provinces, has reported spurt in SARS cases.
As of April 30, there were 12 confirmed cases of SARS and two deaths. Moreover, there were 21 suspected cases of SARS in the southwest Chinese province.
Following the outbreak of SARS epidemic in China, the country's aviation industry has strengthened measures to curb and prevent the spread of SARS.
All airports that have regular flights will be installed with thermometers. Airline companies will strengthen sanitary work on board aircraft. If a SARS patient is identified, it must be immediately reported. Appropriate medication and equipment will also be carried on aircraft, industry sources said.
