Kozhikode, June 03: Unfancied M R Sangeetha (TN) emerged as the sole leader with 5.5 points after the sixth round in the 30th National Women 'B' Chess Championship here today. Trailing behind Sangeetha with 5.0 points apiece are Koneru Chandrahasa (CCA), Bhagyashree Thipsay (IDBI), Anupama Gokhale (PSCB) and Sreeparna Chakraborty (ACC).

Sangeetha, current Tamil Nadu women champion, who is yet to win in a national title, made a centre-counter opening to defeat last year's under-16 champion Vinuthana (AP) in 38 moves.

"I now need to win two of the three remaining rounds consecutively to secure 7.5 points and also retain a progressive score to win the title," the 32 seed, who has so far won 12 state titles with her runner-up title during the 1998 national juniors at Thalassery being her major achievement, said.

However, one more win will ensure her a berth in the National 'A' championship, she said.

In the other important games, Koneru and Bhagyashree split points as also Anupama and Sreeparna to remain in contention for the title behind Sangeetha. Iwms Bhagyashree and Anupama have better progressive score havings won four consecutive rounds and settling for a draw in the next two.
