Tehran, May 10: Tehran's revolutionary court sentenced 15 members of the liberal Iranian opposition to jail terms of up to 11 years for attempting to overthrow the Islamic regime, one of those convicted said today. The defendants, many of whom are close to the banned Iran freedom movement, were arrested mainly in March 2001, a few weeks before presidential elections.
They were among 60 liberal dissidents detained and charged with plotting to overthrow the Tehran regime.
They were also charged with threatening national security, belonging to banned movements and spreading anti-regime propaganda.
The heaviest sentence to come out of the closed-door trial was handed to Taghi Rahmani, a prominent Left-wing activist.
