Nagapattinam, Sept 25: The Coastal Fishermen's Association has threatened a state-wide stir if immediate efforts were not taken by the Centre and Tamil Nadu government to seek the release of 200 Indian fishermen who were taken prisoners by the Sri Lankan Navy. Thousands of fishermen living in the coastal areas would join the stir, the president of the association Selvam Nattar told reporters yesterday.
About 400 fishermen, including 100 women from four coastal villages of Nagapattinam demonstrated in front of the local head post office here in support of their demand. Nattar said despite repeated pleas to both the central and state governments, no measures have been taken in this regard.
He also demanded efforts to bring an end to Sri Lankan naval authorities arresting the fishermen in the mid-sea. Bureau Report
