Kolkata, Oct 31: The controversy over the rally ban issue took a new turn with Subrata Mukherjee, the mayor of Trinamool Congress-controlled Kolkata Muncipal Corporation announcing that the civic body would not allow rallies and meetings in parks as proposed by the Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee as alternative venues to avoid inconvenience to the people. "We have taken up beautification of those parks. Kolkata Municipal Corporation is spending lakhs of rupees for the revamp that includes setting up tiled pavements and other facilities. Besides, these parks are used by sportspersons. We can't allow political gatherings there. The parks cannot be damaged this way", the Mayor told here today.

At a recent all-party meeting which was boycotted by his party the Trinamool Congress, the state government had proposed four patches of the city's greens- Deshbandhu Park, Raja Subodh Mullick Square, Park Circus and Deshapriya Park-as alternative venues for holding meetings to ease rally-related traffic dislocations. "The parks belong to KMC. The state can't dictate terms. The government can suggest but the civic body will not allow meetings in parks", Mukherjee said.

Echoing him, Mayor-in-Council (parks) Hridayananda Gupta said that allowing rallies and meetings in parks would also damage the environment.

Trinamool Congress had yesterday described the Left Front government's proposal as 'absurd' and said that the party did not attach any importance to it since it had already taken the decision not to inconvenience the people by organising rallies on weekdays. Bureau Report
