Pushkar (Rajasthan), Nov 02: Camel Polo, lighting of diyas on the ghats of the holy sarovar and a brilliant display of fireworks marked the beginning of the Pushkar Fair, an annual event which attracts tourists from all over the world. Surrounded by the Nagpahari mountains, the temple town of Pushkar, approximately 11 km from Ajmer, holds the fair in the month of Kartika (significant month in the Hindu calendar) and thus many people come to take a holy dip in the sarovar, Punita Singh, Assistant Director, Tourism of Ajmer district, who is coordinating the fair, said.

The fair, which gets visitors from England, Germany, France, Italy, Israel etc, was inaugurated yesterday with the flag-hosting ceremony by the collector of Ajmer, Niranjan Arya.


Besides the spiritual angle, the Pushkar Fair, which began yesterday and will end on the ninth of this month, is famous for the cattle fair wherein people from various parts of the country like Maharashtra, Punjab and Gujarat, come to buy and sell cattle.
"It is a big socio-economic event involving cattle, pilgrims, tourists, traders etc", she said. "Just the fair period attracts 4,000-5,000 tourists while the total number of visitors during the month of Kartika goes upto five lakh".
