Surfer’s Paradise, Oct 28: Canadian Paul Tracy has won the Cart racing championship title in Australia after a chaotic race.
Tracy held aloft the series trophy, the Vanderbilt Cup, with tears in his eyes after the race in which he finished 13th, but importantly Brazil's Bruno Junqueira, Tracy's only championship rival, finished in a lowly 15th. It has taken Tracy 13 years to achieve this title and he called the chaotic race typical of his career. Tracy spun sideways in the first turn of lap three when he was hit by pole sitter Sebastien Bourdais of France. That put Junqueira in the lead. The race appeared to be a repeat of the chaotic 2002 event when wind, rain and hail forced a full course stoppage on lap 14 for 39 minutes. Champ Car officials shortened the race to 47 laps of the scheduled 65. On lap 20 Tracy was involved in yet another incident which damaged the rear suspension of his car and dropped him three laps behind the leaders. After the track was cleaned of water and hailstones, Junqueira hit a wall on lap 37 after leading for 29 laps in all.

There is one more race in the championship on November 2 at Fontana in California, USA.
