New York City, Dec 03: Heavyweight boxer Klitschko works out in preparation for his upcoming fight in New York City.
Heavyweight boxer Vitali Klitschko was in New York on Tuesday (December 2) preparing for his upcoming December 6 battle with Canadian heavyweight Kirk Johnson. He had a light workout on Tuesday at Gold's Gym in front of the media. The 32-year-old Klitschko, a native of Ukraine who fights out of Germany, came to world prominence in June in Los Angeles when he had Lewis in trouble in their WBC title fight before a gaping cut over his eye forced the referee to end the contest. Although Klitschko lost the fight, he was ahead on all three judges scorecards and most boxing followers were very impressed with his performance. Thirty-one-year-old Johnson, 34-1-1, was due to fight Lewis on the Los Angeles card before a torn pectoral muscle forced him out two weeks before the bout. Johnson-Klitschko will be a non-title match, but the winner could be in line for Lewis if the Heavyweight champion chooses not to retire. Klitschko's upcoming fight with Johnson will take place at Madison Square Garden. For Klitschko, fighting in this venue is a dream come true.

"It was my dream to fight in New York and Madison Square Garden. It's my dream come true, and December 6 I fight in Madison, the mecca of boxing, against a very skilled, very experienced and very good fighter Kirk Johnson from Canada. And I am in good shape and I'm ready to show a good performance on Saturday night," said Klitschko.

Klitschko is now the No. 1 ranked heavyweight by the WBC, a position vacated by Hasim Rahman when he decided to fight John Ruiz on Dec. 13 for a chance at the WBA version of the title.
