Srinagar, June 15: A top Pakistani militant belonging to Tehreek-e-Jehad outfit, who was on a mission to float a new organization in Jammu and Kashmir to give "local colour" to activities of Pakistani ultras, was shot dead by BSF on the outskirts of the city, a BSF spokesman said today. Ghulam Mustafa Jatta alias Khalid, a resident of Sialkot in Pakistan, was killed in a gun battle between militants and BSF troops at Takenwari on the outskirts of Srinagar last night, the spokesman said.
He said troops of 61 battalion of BSF, acting on specific information, challenged some persons at Takenwari and asked them to stop. But they resorted to heavy firing on the jawans.
The troops returned fire and in the ensuing gun battle, Khalid was killed but his accomplices managed to escape, the spokesman said.
He said documents recovered from Khalid revealed that he was on a mission to organize the activities of a new outfit, Jammu and Kashmir freedom force, in the Kashmir valley.
The outfit, a conglomerate of Pakistan-backed militant organisations like Tehreek-e-Jehad, al-Barq and Islamic Front, was formed recently on the directions of Pakistan's ISI so that actions carried out by Pakistani militants in the valley could be claimed by this group in order to give them a "local colour", the spokesman said.
He said one AK rifle, its three magazines, a wireless set and two hand grenades along with some incriminating documents were seized from the site of the encounter.
