Dhaka, May 21: Bangladesh Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan is expected to visit New Delhi May 24 as a "goodwill envoy" for expressing Dhaka's willingness to work together with the new Congress-led government of India.
The upcoming visit of Khan is in pursuance of a government decision to send a senior cabinet minister to New Delhi following the Congress victory under Sonia Gandhi in the general elections.
"The government has already decided to send a senior cabinet member as a special envoy of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to express Dhaka's highest political goodwill to closely work with the new government led by Manmohan Singh in neighbouring India," an official source said on Thursday.
During his two or three-day sojourn in New Delhi, the Bangladesh foreign minister is likely to call on the new Indian prime minister and some senior members of his cabinet.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led four-party coalition government believes that the newly elected government in India can play a positive role in reducing tension along the border areas, lessening the huge trade gap between the two countries and dropping the river-linking plan of the outgoing government which, it was feared here, could have led to a water scarcity in Bangladesh.
