Rome, May 11: Unseeded Spaniard Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo faces the unenviable task of taking on top seed Serena Williams after winning her first round match against France's Sandrine Testud at the Rome Masters yesterday.
Sanchez-Lorenzo won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Foro Italico to set up a daunting second round tie against the former world number one, who was given a bye into the last 32.
Williams is a six-time grand slam winner, while Sanchez-Lorenzo has one WTA Tour singles title to her name.
Italian 14th seed Francesca Schiavone enjoyed plenty of support from the home crowd in her defeat of Australian Nicole Pratt in straight sets.
Schiavone will play Samantha Reeves in round two after the unseeded American beat her compatriot Lisa Raymond 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Four Russians advanced with Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova, Elena Bovina and Vera Douchevina all winning their first round matches at the Italian clay court tournament.
