United Nations, Oct 16: Emphasizing that it continues to pay a heavy price for its fight against cross-border terrorism, India has expressed its firm determination to "confront" and "overcome" the challenges posed by the menace. Charging Pakistan with continuing to support, finance and sponsor terrorism in violation of the security council resolutions, Indian representative to UN K. Kalavenkata Rao said the global coalition against the scourge has worked well in many cases but failed to produce the "desired effect" in some.
"It worked well in Afghanistan. But in spite of the Security Council resolutions calling for united action against support, shelter, sponsorship, arming, training of terrorists, certain countries have not stopped form indulging sponsorship cross-border terrorism," he told the UN counter terrorism counter committee yesterday. Stating that Pakistani actions are a case in point, he quoted from United Nations secretary-general's report to buttress his contention.
In his report in July 2, 2003, Annan had said that investigations by the Austrian government into possible involvement of an Austrian entity in providing hand grenades used in attack on the Indian Parliament on December 13, 2001 led to the conclusion that the grenades used in this ghastly attack had been produced in Pakistan. This indicates that "lots more remains to be done to carry for ward the war against international terrorism," he told the committee. Bureau Report
