New Delhi, Mar 23: Putting an end to all speculations, BJP today announced its alliance with Janata Dal(United) for the Lok Sabha elections as well as for the assembly elections in Karnataka. Addressing the press conference, Arun Jaitley disclosed its alliance with JD(U). He said both parties would contest elections together for the Karnataka Assembly and the Lok Sabha.
It was decided last night after a two-day meeting between the leaders of two parties, law minister Arun Jaitley, who is BJP`s election incharge of Karnataka, announced here today.
BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu, defence minister George Fernandes, minister of state for foreign affairs Digvijay Singh, BJP Karnataka unit president Anant Kumar were also present at the press conference, held at Fernandes` residence.
Leaders of the both parties said that the seat sharing understanding was reached amicably and there was no interference of the Central leadership in the matter.
In reply to a question why there was a delay in announcing the candidates, Digvijay Singh said that it would be announced in a day or two. There was delay as the party had to consider many factors keeping in mind the situation prevailing in Bihar particularly where a candidate had to contest the election against hostile conditions. Talking to newspersons, Anant Kumar claimed that the BJP was sure to grab power in Karnataka as the BJP-JD(U) combine was very strong in the state. The joining of former chief minister Bangarappa, and Bharat Hegde, son of late Ram Krishna Hegde, had also added considerable strength to the alliance in the state.
“The chief ministerial candidate for Karnataka hasn’t been decided as a part of electoral strategy,” said Arun Jaitley.
In the Karnataka assembly elections, BJP will contest from 199 seats and JD(U) will fight from 27 seats.
In the Lok Sabha elections, out of 28 seats, BJP has decided to contest from 24 seats and JD(U) will contest from 4 seats. BJP has left those Lok Sabha seats, where it doesn’t have stronghold.
Jaitley said that the two parties had also broadly reached a seat sharing agreement in Jharkhand and Bihar but some modalities were yet to be completed. JD(U) leader Digvijay Singh said that alliance for the Jharkhand and Bihar will be finalised within the next two days. Bureau Report
