London, Dec 04: John McEnroe defeated Jeremy Bates in the opening match of the Honda Challenge.
Former Wimbledon champion John McEnroe defeated Jeremy Bates 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the opening match of the Honda Challenge seniors tennis tournament on Wednesday (December 3). The 44-year-old McEnroe, who is the oldest competitor in the event, lost the first set to Britain's new Davis Cup captain, but fought back to take the second set 6-3. The American clinched the match in the deciding champions tie-break 10-6. McEnroe is bidding to secure the title for the fourth time, having won in 1997, 1998 and 1999. His main opponents include Germans Boris Becker and Michael Stich, and Guy Forget of France. Becker and McEnroe have been drawn in separate groups for the tournament, which is being played in London's Royal Albert Hall. The top two players in each group of four will qualify for Saturday's semi-finals. The final will be played on Sunday December 7.
