Ghaziabad(UP), July 29: At least 16 people, including a sub-inspector and three constables were injured, when a mob of about 100 villagers, protesting the arrest of some persons involved in power theft, attacked a police post and set ablaze official records at Lal Kuan near here today. Police resorted to lathicharge as the residents of Shahpur Bamehta, angry over the arrest of 14 villagers last night for alleged involvement in power theft, indulged in stone pelting and arson, damaging the furniture, a wireless set and records of the Lal Kuan police post, police circle officer Dharmbir told a news agency. Sub-inspector Shatrugan Upadhya, who had arrested the villagers last night, was injured in the clash, the officer said.

The protestors alleged that the police was implicating them in "false cases" and demanded an independent probe into "police atrocities" and action against guilty officers. Bureau Report
