Montreal, June 12: David Coulthard hopes to rekindle his F1 championship hopes in Montreal on Sunday - in what could be the last outing for his current McLaren car.
The MP4-17 is set for its final race at the Canadian Grand Prix, and Coulthard could be driving its successor, the MP4-18, in a fortnight's time. Despite being 23 points behind team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, who leads the drivers' standings, the Scot is in confident mood.
"The title is still wide open and a win would bring me right back into it," Coulthard insisted. "But I am not getting enough from my results to make an impact, and am going backwards relative to the championship leaders," he admitted.
Coulthard tested his new car last week, and will return to Jerez next week for more practice. The MP4-18 is set to be ahead of the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in two weeks' time.
"It was excellent to have my debut run in the MP4-18 at the Barcelona test," he said. "After all the hype, it was fantastic to be able to drive it and it felt good."
