Jalandhar, June 14: The doors of Bhai Nihal Singh Gurudwara at Talhan have been thrown open for general public from today. The move comes after the compromise reached between Punjab government and more than 150 devotees who locked themselves up inside Gurudwara yesterday. The stand-off resolved following a compromise paving the way for takeover of the shrine in the wake of violent clashes between Dalits and Jat Sikhs.
The siege of the Gurudwara, which began on Thursday night with devotees, Sikh priests and sewadars locking themselves from inside at the shrine in protest against government's decision to appoint a receiver for managing it, ended on Friday evening as all of them came out following persuasion by the administration and police.
"As the people who locked themselves came outside, now the gurudwara will be managed by the five-member Maryada committee and six-member management committee under the guidance of receiver Inderpreet Singh Kahlon, appointed by the government," Deputy Commissioner A K Gupta told reporters in Jalandhar.
Gupta said no assurance was given to those who had locked themselves inside the gurudwara on the issue of appointing a receiver but they were told that police would not take any action against them. Bureau Report
