Dhaka, June 28: Bangladeshi police have seized more than 100 kgs of explosives and a huge quantity of ammunition from a north-western district, official sources said today. In probably the biggest haul of its kind in the country, police in Bogra district recovered 114 kgs of explosives from a Noagaon-bound truck laden with pineapples, a news agency quoted officials as saying. Police also seized 62,100 rounds of bullets of Chinese rifle from the truck and are looking for a local leader of Krishak League, the farmers' front of the main opposition Awami League, in this connection, they said. Police arrested five persons including the wife of the Krishak League leader Aklakhur Rahman in relation to the illegal consignment, home minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury informed the Parliament.
Police learnt that another 12,000 rounds of bullets were delivered to another local al leader on the way, a news agency said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia today said an operation would again be launched to deal with growing crimes but the army would not take part in it.
"The earlier joint operation against terrorism yielded very good results...It has now become necessary once again to start the drive," she said after inaugurating a bridge in south-western Khulna district.
The earlier anti-crime crackdown, led by the army, ended in January this year. Bureau Report
