Kathmandu, June 13: The United Kingdom has been providing training and non-lethal military assistance to the Royal Nepalese Army to enable it counter the insurgents "in case of any resumption of armed conflicts", the British special envoy to Nepal has said.
"However, the UK government believes that there can be no acceptable military solution to the conflict," Jeffrey James, who is on a visit to the Himalayan Kingdom told reporters here yesterday.
"Britain wants to help the peace process move forward," he said adding that the purpose of his visit, second since March as special representative, was to see what new opportunities for peace might have opened up.
When asked whether Britain planned to enlist the Maoists as terrorist organization as us, he said there was no such plan as yet. He also denied his meeting with any Maoist leader adding that they had not approached him either.
"We look forward to a successful outcome to the peace process, consistent with stability in Nepal," he said.
James said part of his assignment was also to strengthen international cooperation for Nepal in her peace initiatives.
