New Delhi, June 27: Shahi imam of Fatehpuri Masjid Mukarram Ahmad today questioned the locus standi of Kanchi Sankaracharya to "arbitrate" on the Ayodhya dispute and said there was "no need" for the Muslim Personal Law Board to convene any meeting to evolve a "formula" for solving the stand-off. Addressing a gathering of devotees here, Shahi imam Mukarram Ahmad sought to know "who appointed the Sankaracharya as arbitrator for Babri masjid issue," according to a media release. He said: "Hindus are saying we will not accept his formula. Central government is saying we do not know about his formula. Muslims did not appoint him as arbitrator". "Then Muslim personal law board has no need to convene a meeting to evolve a formula for solving the issue". "Muslims will not surrender the masjid`s place to anyone," he said and demanded that the court proceedings on the matter be expedited. The imam also requested the Central government not to heed to America`s request to send troops to Iraq. He welcomed the inclusion of Urdu as a second official language in Delhi and appealed to government to give effective support in the form of increased staff and other facilities. Bureau Report
