Kolkata, Aug 02: Three militants of banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) were killed in an encounter with police in Jalpaiguri today. On a tip off police intercepted and challenged the militants coming on cycles from Bhutanghat in Dakshin Haldibari area of the district, DIG Police (HQ) N C Ghosh told the reporters.

The ultras fired on the policemen injuring two constables prompting the security personnel to retaliate in which two militants were killed, he said.
Another ultra was killed while trying to flee. They were identified as Arup Sharma alias Ratan, Rajesh Rai and Dipu, all residents of adjoining Dhubri district of Assam, the DIG said. Two 9 mm chinese pistols, two magazines, one mini-tape recorder, wireless sets and some documents, including road maps of Jalpaiguri and Assam were recovered from them, Ghosh said.
Police said the ultras were suspected to have been planning a major offensive in North Bengal.
Patrolling in the area has been increased and the local police was in touch with their counterparts in neighbouring Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. Bureau Report
