New Delhi, Sept 11: Mohammad Ali Qamar, who returned with a gold medal from Kuala Lumpur early this month, refrained from competing in the senior National Boxing Championship being held in Bangalore so that he could concentrate on the Afro-Asian Games. "The National Championship was scheduled immediately after the Commonwealth boxing in Malaysia and I wanted to keep myself fit for Afro-Asian Games," Qamar said.

He said maintaining perfect weight before the Bangalore competition was difficult for him since "I am still recovering from some minor injuries I sustained in Malaysia," the Arjuna awardee said. Qamar said he was keeping track of the boxers contending in his event.

"I am following of the bouts through newspapers and glad that Khemanand was excelling there.

"He could give me a tough competition when we attend a camp in Patiala later next month, ahead of the AAG," the Kolkata boxer said.

Other senior pugilists including Jitendra Kumar and Ramamand also decided against participating the National boxing. About the plot of land the West Bengal government has decided to give Qamar, he said "I'll still have to pay Rs 1 lakh for the plot".

The plot, measuring four cottahs, and on eastern metropolitan bypass, would be given to the boxer at a rate much below the market price, state minister for urban development Ashok Bhattacharya told newspersons here yesterday.
