Lucknow, Feb 01: Tension prevailed in Kaunch area of Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun district after a senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and his brother were killed in police firing this morning. Police claimed that SP town president Surendra Niranjan and his brother Mahendra led a mob to a police station in Kaunch tehsil of Jalaun. They were allegedly protesting against detention of some people last night following the death of a person in a group clash.

Even as the two had a heated argument with the officer incharge, the mob reportedly opened fire and pelted stones on the police. The SP leader and his brother were killed in 'retaliatory' action by the police while eight others, including some policemen were injured.
Police said the irate mob set several vehicles on fire and damaged property in government offices.

Meanwhile, state DGP V K B Nair told reporters that as per information, Inspector D D S Rathore opened fire in which ''only one person was killed.'' A report from Jalaun said a 'curfew-like' situation prevailed in the tehsil where the situation was said to be tense but under control.
