New Delhi, Aug 18: In the backdrop of the raging pesticides-cola controversy, a crucial meeting of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will be held here today to discuss a review of standards for soft drinks, including their possible upgradation.
In line with the directives of Consumer Affairs Minister Sharad Yadav, BIS intends to make standards of all products "dynamic", with the same being revised according to the market and technological developments and not after a fixed time period.
"BIS standards for foods and beverages are being reviewed and, if necessary, taken up for revision. Results of the review for soft drinks will be discussed in today's meeting," official sources told reporters.
BIS had published an Indian standard on carbonated beverages, IS 2346:1992, which was reaffirmed in 1997 and then again earlier this year, they said.
However, Yadav took the view that since human health was involved in consumption of food products all their standards must be reviewed afresh.

In pursuance of this directive, the task of reviewing the standard for carbonated beverages was allotted to two Mysore-based institutions Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) and Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL).

Their findings will be deliberated upon today, including possible upgradation of norms for quality of water used for carbonated beverages.
