Beijing, Aug 15: In yet another major coal mine accident, at least 26 miners have been killed when a gas explosion ripped through a mine in Chinese northern city of Yangquan. The blast occurred on Thursday afternoon, trapping 28 miners working underground in north China's Shanxi province, the country's leading coal producer.
As of midnight Thursday, rescue workers had recovered 26 bodies, reported a news agency today. Rescue work was going on to search for the two missing miners and an investigation into the accident was underway, the report said.
On Monday, 28 miners died and another 14 were missing in a coal mine gas explosion in Datong city of the same province. Mine accidents this month have already killed over 100 people in China. Authorities blame most of the accidents to lax safety standards in remote coal mines run by county governments or individuals. Bureau Report
