Chennai, Dec 05: Abdullah Sani Karim, vice president of World Squash Federation, today said that squash would be included as a medal sport in the 2012 Olympics. Inaugurating the first Asian squash federation three-day seminar for administrators and coaches, at the Indian cements squash academy, Karim said the sport would be considered as a demonstration sport in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He said member countries of WSF and ASF should endeavour their best to make squash a medal sport in Olympics.
Pointing to the spurt, the game had generated among the world youth, Karim said the Asian countries have shown greater interest in squash and lauded the efforts of ASF in making squash a medal sport in Asian Games.
"It should be included in the Olympics too. All the member countries have the responsibility in realising this," he said.
Praising the Squash Rackets Federation of India, Karim said, "It is heartening to see the development of the game in India. They are rated as strong contenders in junior level events in the world."
ASF president and a top official at India Cements, N Ramachandran said administrators and coaches from 15 countries have already arrived for the seminar and hoped it would create new vistas for furtherance of the sport in the region.
The seminar would conclude with ASF coaches awards night on Sunday, a unique concept mooted by the ASF to honour coaches at different levels in Asia. Bureau Report
