Islamabad, Sept 21: The Muttahida Quami Movement has demanded complete provincial autonomy under which the Centre would keep defence, foreign policy, communication and currency subjects and the rest will be handled by the provinces.

"We do no want a strong Centre but a strong federation where provinces have complete autonomy," deputy convener of MQM, Aftab Ahmed Sheikh told state television. He said that unlike the past the MQM, which has its mass base in southern Sindh, has fielded candidates from Punjab, NWFP, Balochistan and Sindh for the forthcoming polls. The candidates belong to all ethnic groups, he said.
He said according to MQM's perception, 98 per cent population of Pakistan was poor and downtrodden and lacked even basic necessities of life.

The remaining two per cent comprised feudals and industrialists who have accumulated the 98 per cent wealth of the country.
Stating that the MQM was the party of lower and middle classes, he said that the party has not asked for ticket fee from its candidates.
He said that if voted to power, MQM would spent five per cent of GDP on education and make education compulsory upto Matric level.

Special attention would be given to economic growth, health, women uplift and other matters of national importance.
