Mumbai, Apr 10: Iqbal Hassan Ibrahim Shaikh, younger
brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, and two others were
today remanded to judicial custody till April 24 by a special
court in a case of alleged extortion and land grabbing under
Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
Others arrested with Iqbal are Abdul Rehman Abdul Gafoor
Shaikh and Abdul Sattar Haji Hiva Radhanpur. Earlier, they
were placed in police custody.
The trio are facing charge of forcibly evicting a woman
from her house which obstructed the entrance of a shopping
Centre allegedly owned by Dawood Ibrahim and his associate
Chhota Shakeel in South Mumbai.
Police alleged that the associates of the accused were
harassing the complainant and that efforts were being made to
settle the dispute with her. Her sons were prevented from
doing their business. Persons chasing the complainant have
been traced and their activities were being watched, the court
was told.
Police alleged that this case was the tip of the ice-berg and the modus operandi of the trio was to help the Dawood Ibrahim syndicate to channelise funds into real estate by acquiring old buildings and converting them into multiplexes.
Iqbal was deported from Dubai last month and was arrested in a murder case in which he has already secured bail. This is the second case in which he has been arrested under MCOCA. Bureau Report
