Last weekend's semi-finalist in Los Angeles was replaced in the draw by lucky loser Nicolas Massu of Chile to play Max Mirnyi of Belarus. Philippoussis said that he felt ill after arriving from Los Angles on Sunday.
"I've looked forward to competing in Montreal, especially since I've been playing good tennis lately. After travelling from LA on Sunday, I started feeling ill.
"Doctors told me to rest for a few days."
