United Nations, June 02:
The United Nations has decided to evacuate the families of its staff from Pakistan and India as a precautionary measure, a spokesman said. Although their relatives are being relocated, UN workers in both South Asian countries will remain at their posts, said spokesman Stephane Dujarric yesterday. “All the personnel will in place. The families will go,” Dujarric said, adding that the action will not have any effect on our operations in Afghanistan. Officials said that UN staff in Afghanistan usually transit through Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. The decision to evacuate family members was taken late Friday as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan left New York to begin a week-long tour taking him to Ukraine, Russia, Switzerland and Italy.
Meanwhile, UN spokesman in Pakistan Eric Falt said in Islamabad that the departure from Pakistan of family members of UN personnel will begin today as fears of war with India prompted an evacuation order from both countries. “The first of the dependents of UN staff will leave today. In total, more than 300 people will leave Pakistan over the next few days,” Falt said.
The departure will mostly be carried out on commercial flights, and the staff members themselves will remain in the country, he added.
