Vadodara, Oct 09: Thirteen of the twenty-one accused acquitted in the Best Bakery case by a fast-track court were re-arrested here today after the Gujarat High Court
issued bailable warrants against them last week. They were later released on bail, official sources said.
The thirteen arrested were produced before the court which released them on bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 each as prescribed by the high court on September 29, Police Commissioner S K Sinha said.
Chastised by the Supreme Court for filing an "eye wash" appeal against the trial court verdict in the Best Bakery case, the Gujarat government on September 29 filed an amended criminal petition in the high court seeking retrial of the 21 people acquitted in the case. Officials said that the remaining eight accused persons would also be re-arrested soon as per the HC directives. The acquittal of the accused had led to widespread protest and the key witness Zahira demanded trial outside Gujarat, prompting the Supreme Court to pass strictures against the state government.
