Srinagar, Aug 10: A major tragedy was today averted in Jammu and Kashmir when security forces detected two grenades, three kg of explosives fitted with a gas cylinder and a wireless set, planted by militants at Sumbal Bala near Gund-Kangan road on Srinagar-Leh Highway, an official spokesman said. "Had the powerful explosive material exploded, heavy casualties would have taken place," he said. Militants also hurled a grenade towards a security picket at Gojwara Chowk in downtown Srinagar today. The device did not explode and was neutralised by experts, the spokesman said. A jawan was injured when militants fired on a security patrol at Gousia colony in Bemina locality of the city last evening, he added.
