Guwahati, July 12: Brahmaputra and its tributaries today submerged parts of the state capital while flood continued large-scale devastation in 20 districts affecting more than 23 lakh people, official sources said here.
The army had already been called in some of the affected districts to assist the civil administration in rescue and relief operations following the flood havoc in the state which had so far claimed 17 lives.
The sources said that the situation had been aggravated following heavy and incessant rains in the catchment areas of the state and in the hills of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.
The flood situation might further worsen if moderate to heavy rains continued in the catchment areas of Brahmaputra and its tributaries for the next couple of days.
The swirling waters of the Brahmaputra had submerged several areas in the capital city of Guwahati after a gap of five years and the mighty river was flowing 1.21 metre above the danger level here.
There was incessant rains in the city for the third consecutive day and the water level of the Brahmaputra was maintaining a rising trend with the overall situation likely to worsen further, the sources said.
According to central water commission sources, the Brahmaputra was flowing alarmingly above the red mark at Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Goalpara, Dhubri and Nalbari.
