New Delhi, Oct 03: The Union Cabinet today decided to give six-month extension to the Nanawati Commission probing the 1984 Sikh riots following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told reporters after its meeting.
The one-man commission headed by Justice G T Nanavati, a retired judge of the supreme court, was constituted on May 9, 2000 and its term has been extended after every six months.

The commission probing the sequence of events that led to large scale riots in the capital and other parts of the country after the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, was supposed to submit its report within six months.

The commission has completed recording of evidence and the final arguments but it was yet to issue notices under Section 8(b) of the commission of inquiry act to erring officials and others allegedly involved in the riots so they could defend themselves.

This is the second probe panel on the anti-Sikh riots.

The first commission on the riot was headed by Justice Rangnath Misra but the BJP-led NDA government set up the second commission following a widespread demand from different sections of the public, particularly the Sikh community.
