Kathmandu, Aug 08: About 200 victims of the
Maoists insurgency today staged a demonstration outside the UN
building here demanding their safety, rehabilitation and
medical treatment.
The victims staged a sit-in at the gate of the UN
building at Pulchowk here and handed over a memorandum listing
their demands.
Alleging that the government has turned a blind eye
to their plight, the president of the Nepal Maoist victims
association Ganesh Chiluwal said in the memorandum that the
Maoists have continued killing, abducting, and terrorising
people even after the cease-fire six months ago.
Saying that 27 people have been killed after the
cease-fire and hundreds displaced, he said the victims are
demanding relief, medical treatment and employment for their
families.
According to the memorandum, about 50,000 people have been displaced by the seven year long insurgency and an equal number have flown to India to escape the insurgency.
Some 8,000 people were killed, 20,000 injured and 2524 abducted by the rebels during the insurgency, Chiluwal said adding that they had also demonstrated outside prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa residence but there was no response.
He said that though international donors have provided assistance to the Bhutanese refugees, our condition is worse as we have become refugees in our own country. Bureau Report
