Kolkata, June 19: A wedding on wheels -- the first of its kind in the country -- will see a bride begin a new life when her marriage is solemnised in a train.
Smita Agarwal, a toy train lover and daughter of an ardent toy train fan Nirmal Agarwal, would tie the knot with full vedic rituals on board the famous toy train which runs between Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling on November 22.
Agarwal has applied to the northeast frontier railway for chartering the train, with heritage value, according to a NF Railway spokesperson. The cost of chartering the train would be Rs 1.5 lakh.
The bride and the groom's parties would board the train at New Jalpaiguri and would return to Kolkata after a night's halt at Darjeeling.
The toy train, which was given world heritage status by the UNESCO, covers a distance of 88 km and has a capacity of 26 persons per coach.
About 85 people would be on board during the ritual since more people cannot be accommodated. The journey would be over in the afternoon at Darjeeling.
The Agarwals are planning to spend about Rs four lakh for the entire tour including decorating the train and the overnight halt at Darjeeling. They would have their own catering arrangements of a multi-course vegetarian cuisine on board.
A similar wedding was held a few years ago at the heritage site of Victoria Memorial where steel baron L N Mittal's son's marriage was solemnised.
