London, Sept 20: Ten asylum-seekers including Indians who had escaped from a detention centre are yet to be traced, a spokeswoman of the South Yorkshire police said today.
They were among 20 men who fled from the Lindholme Removal Centre in South Yorkshire on Sunday evening, prompting a major search peration.
The breakout, the latest in a series of escape attempts from the centre, was condemned by Oliver Letwin, the shadow home secretary, as a symbol of Britain's asylum "chaos".
Half of the escapees, who included Indians, Iraqis, Kosovans, Macedonians and Ukrainians had been recaptured by yesterday afternoon in a manhunt involving 40 officers, tracker dogs and a helicopter.
They were found in fields and villages within a 10-km radius of Lindholme, near Doncaster. Police said they were confident that all the escapers would be recaptured.
The 112-bed detention centre, which adjoins a category C prison, was set up in 2001 in a former RAF base.
