Washington, June 21: The United States has called on the UN Security Council to pass a "strong" statement expressing international concerns about North Korea's nuclear weapons drive. State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said such a statement would help push the communist North into multi-lateral talks on ending the latest nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula.
"We've been exploring the possibility of a (UN) presidential statement as a means to convey authoritatively and unequivocally the international community's concern to Pyongyang," Reeker told a briefing yesterday.
The United States believes "that a strong public statement from the council would strengthen our diplomatic efforts to reach a peaceful solution and would complement efforts by countries in the region aimed at multilateral talks with North Korea," he added.
Reeker said the United States has distributed a draft statement to the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France and Russia. But he would not say if or when a vote was expected.
"I think there are many members of the Security Council that agree on the importance of speaking clearly on this issue, and we're discussing the timing and modalities for doing so," said the US spokesman.
He said that a statement by the rotating presidency of the Security Council, which during June is held by Russia, was one possibility of expressing international concern.
