Multan, Oct 06: A speeding van rammed into an oncoming bus in central Pakistan today, killing 11 people and injuring six others, police said. All the victims were in the van and seven of them died on the spot in the crash near Soraba, a village about 120 kilometres northeast of Multan, said Malik Sarfaraz, a deputy superintendent of police in the area.

The collision occurred when the van was passing a car but its driver lost control and slammed into the bus coming from the opposite direction, Sarfaraz said. Two of the injured were listed in serious condition.

Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan and many are blamed on roads that are often overcrowded and poorly maintained. Disregard for traffic rules is widespread and public transport drivers work long hours.
