New Delhi, Nov 21: The Supreme Court today appointed former Solicitor General Harish Salve as the amicus curiae to inspect the renovation and restoration work by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at the 17th century Mughal monument Red Fort and verify allegations that the work was not upto the international norms. A bench comprising Chief Justice V N Khare and Justice B Sinha asked salve to give a report after inspecting the site along with Solicitor General Kirit Raval and petitioner`s counsel Kapil Sibal.

Petitioner Rajiv Sethi and others had alleged that the renovation work was not up to the international standards and submitted today that ASI has demolished a 19th century monument inside the Red Fort complex built by the British on the ground that it did not conform to the surroundings.

Pointing out several flaws in the method adopted by ASI in doing the restoration and renovation work, the petitioners had alleged that it was causing more harm to the historical monument than any good.
Allaying apprehensions of damage to the red fort by the ongoing renovation work, the ASI in its affidavit had informed the Supreme Court that the restoration work was "in strict compliance with highest internationally accepted standards".
