UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has said he would give India a permanent seat in the security council if it were only upto him.
"If it were upto me it would not have been a problem but there are 189 members who have to decide. India`s name, though, figures quite regularly whenever there is talk of expansion of the council," Annan said addressing a gathering of officials from all the three services at the United Services Institution (USI) in New Delhi.

The Secretary General was particularly appreciative of Indian peacekeepers in UN operations all over the world.
"India is world ahead in peacekeeping and UN would look for insight and advice from it to carry out necessary reforms. It would do good to the UN if India would train soldiers from other countries who share the enthusiasm and determination but lack the experience," Annan said.
Annan also called for a resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan on basis of the Lahore declaration. Bureau Report
