Kathmandu, June 26: A total of 101 new HIV positive cases were registered in Nepal in the month of may, taking the number of people with AIDS/HIV to 2,883, an official in the ministry of health said today. There are nearly 60,000 drug abusers in Nepal and among them 42 per cent are HIV positive, the official at the HIV/AIDS division of the ministry told a programme on the International Day against drug-abuse in Kathmandu.


Among the drug abusers, 72 per cent use needle to inject drugs, which has potential to spread the deadly virus, he said.

The monthly data relating to the HIV infected people is especially alarming, he said adding if this trend continues then it will take only 25 months to spread HIV/AIDS to as many people as have been infected in the past 15 years.

He added that among the housewives 0.77 percent are HIV positive.
