Kolkata, May 28: BSNL has set a target of almost doubling its customer base for GSM cellular services from 2.8 million to five million by the end of the current fiscal to become the largest player in the growing cellular market.
"We have a current customer base of about 2.8 million and are targetting to reach the five million figure by March, 2004," BSNL chairman-cum-managing director, Prithipal Singh, told reporters here on Tuesday.
BSNL, a relatively late entrant in the cellular market, has bagged the second position in terms of customer base just behind Bharti, which had 3.2 million subscribers for its cellular services, he said.
Singh's latest growth projection was due to positive response the BSNL's Cell One service was receiving from across the country as only in February this year Singh had projected that the company would reach a figure of 4.5 million by the end of 2003-04.
BSNL's mobile service is currently available in more than 900 cities across the country.
