New Delhi, July 23: Deputy chairperson Najma Heptulla today directed the Centre to consider a scheme to provide assistance to aged and renowned artistes for rendering yeomen service to the country. The direction came after several members wanted government to provide all necessary help to Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismilla Khan who is facing financial hardships.

The issue was raised through a special mention by nominated member C Narayana Reddy who wanted government to provide life-long assistance to celebrities and artistes like Ustad in advanced age.

He was joined by several members including BJP member Kalraj Mishra who said the Prime Minister had already announced some financial support. Heptulla said there were no two opinion in this regard and urged the government to consider a scheme to help such artistes in old age.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs O Rajagopal said the Prime Minister had already taken note of this and the directions of the chair would be conveyed to government. Bureau Report
